Strategy Coaching

Vijay Govindarajan, known as VG, is the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business at the Tuck School, and Founding Director of Tuck's Center for Global Leadership. VG's area of expertise is strategy, with particular emphasis on strategic innovation, industry transformation, and global strategy and organization. He has written more than 60 articles and was the coauthor of The Quest for Global Dominance.

Coaching Approach

Vijay Govindarajan (VG) works exclusively in the area of strategy with the CEO and top management team. His coaching tends to be with that small group, rather than one on one, and focuses more on business issues than behavioral ones.

Strategy coaching has become so valuable for organizations for four primary reasons. First, the world has become very complex, and the half-life of knowledge has rapidly shortened. Organizations need to generate fresh ideas to keep their competitive edge. Second, organizations need not only answers to problems but frameworks that apply tomorrow's landscape to today's opportunities. Third, strategy coaches fulfill the organization's need to understand what is leading edge in their own industry and in seemingly unrelated industries. Fourth, it is very difficult for a CEO to have an open, candid, and free conversation about strategy.

Strategy issues are far too complex for any one person to solve. CEOs need a multidisciplinary team to manage them. As a strategy coach, one of VG's primary assets is his ability to facilitate across the top team.
